Community Links
The Debt Management Industries “Code of Practice” dictates
that a relationship be maintained with various community
services that our clients can be referred to. These
community services can help to address root causes of
individuals financial suffering and can aid in the recovery
of their financial distress. These resources are for
anyone who needs professional referrals, consumer advocacy,
or information in a variety of areas that affect personal
financial management. These areas include suicide prevention,
stress management, substance abuse counseling, marriage
counseling, housing, legal services, consumer rights’ organizations,
career development, childcare, health care, and student
financial aid.
It is important to differentiate counseling
from the practice of therapy. Credit Counselors are not
licensed therapists. Credit Counselors seek to facilitate
solutions while assessing client debt, client resources,
and client attitudes and emotions.
Crisis intervention can play a role
in a credit counselor’s interaction with a financially
distressed client. It is important for credit counselors
to be aware of and sensitive to the potentially volatile
nature of credit problems and financial distress in general.
